I was watching my fourteen-year-old nephew play a video game when I noticed there were three characters on the screen. One was his avatar. The other two were running alongside him.
My first thought was immediate concern.
"Are those real people?" I asked, assuming he was playing online with strangers.
Without even looking up, he smiled and said, "No. The first one is AI, and he's my friend. The other one is AI, and he's my enemy."
Then he looked at me as if I were the one who needed the technology lesson.

"AI can be your friend, and AI can be your enemy."
I just sat there for a moment thinking, Wow. That's an incredibly wise way to think about such an important topic.
Every day, we hear that AI is replacing jobs. Headlines announce companies laying off thousands of employees as technology takes over tasks that once required people. That reality creates uncertainty and fear for many professionals.
But perhaps we're asking the wrong question.
The real question isn't whether AI is the enemy.
The real question is: Will AI become your friend or your enemy?
Technology will continue to transform how we work. That will not change. What is within our control is how we respond. The professionals who learn to partner with AI, ask better questions, and use it to expand their thinking will have an advantage over those who avoid it and hope it disappears.
AI is becoming a workplace reality.
Whether it becomes our greatest ally or our greatest competitor is a choice each of us gets to make.
The following nine principles that Shahla Canafax shared at a recent Rise Beyond™ webinar can help you build a healthier, more productive partnership with AI while strengthening the leadership qualities that no technology can replace.
1. AI Is a Leadership Thought Partner, Not a Replacement
Use AI to strengthen your leadership thinking, not to replace it. The most effective leaders use AI to challenge assumptions, uncover blind spots, compare trade-offs, prepare for important conversations, and refine decisions. AI can provide insight and perspective, but leadership ownership always remains with you.
2. Better Context Creates Better Results
The quality of AI's output is directly tied to the quality of your input. Instead of asking AI to complete a task, provide context by explaining the situation, the audience, the stakes, the constraints, the tone you want to convey, and the type of response you need. Rich context produces more relevant, practical, and actionable results.
3. Ask AI to Challenge Your Thinking
Rather than looking for agreement, use AI as an intelligent challenger. Ask it to identify assumptions you may be making, highlight potential blind spots, point out risks, present opposing viewpoints, and evaluate whether your approach aligns with the values and leadership behaviors you want to demonstrate. The goal is stronger thinking, not confirmation.
4. Make Better Decisions Through Structured Analysis
AI can help leaders evaluate options by comparing their impact, risks, effort, timing, stakeholder implications, and reversibility. One particularly valuable question is:
"If I have to reverse this decision later, what will it cost me in trust, time, money, or credibility?"
Using AI to structure your decision-making leads to more thoughtful and balanced leadership choices.
5. Use AI to Practice Before It Matters
AI provides a safe environment to rehearse high-stakes conversations before having them in real life. Leaders can role-play difficult discussions with employees, customers, executives, or other stakeholders, receive honest feedback on their communication style, anticipate tough questions, and strengthen their message before stepping into the actual conversation.
6. Verify Everything and Protect What Matters
AI can sound convincing while producing inaccurate information, fabricated sources, or biased recommendations. Verify important facts, question AI-generated conclusions, and never rely on AI without applying your own judgment. Equally important, confidential company information, employee data, customer information, and other sensitive content should never be shared with AI tools unless your organization's policies explicitly allow it.
7. Understand AI's Growing Impact on Careers
Many organizations now use AI systems to screen job applicants before a human ever reviews a résumé. This makes it increasingly important to create AI-friendly résumés with clear formatting and relevant keywords. It also serves as a reminder that a lack of interview opportunities may reflect automated filtering systems rather than a person's talent or potential.
8. Your Humanity Is Your Greatest Competitive Advantage
As AI becomes more capable, uniquely human qualities become even more valuable. Creativity, wisdom, empathy, ethics, judgment, curiosity, and the ability to build trust cannot be automated. Leaders who rely on AI to think for them risk weakening these abilities. Leaders who use AI to amplify their human strengths will continue to stand out.
9. Build AI Leadership Through Consistent Practice
The fastest way to become more effective with AI is through regular experimentation. Challenge one assumption before a meeting. Evaluate an important decision. Adapt communication for different audiences. Rehearse a difficult conversation. Identify risks. Turn meeting notes into clear decisions and action items.
The objective is to become a better thinker, make better decisions, and become a more effective leader.
I keep thinking about my nephew's words:
"AI can be your friend, and AI can be your enemy."
For all the debates about artificial intelligence, those may be the wisest words I've heard.
AI will continue to evolve. It will become faster, more capable, and more integrated into every profession. The leaders who thrive are the ones who learn to partner with it intentionally while strengthening the qualities that make us uniquely human.
The future belongs to the leaders who know when to trust AI, when to challenge it, and when to rely on the wisdom, judgment, courage, and humanity that no technology can replace.
